There are a number of skills that every hunter needs to be at least proficient at, if not master, if they want to have any hope of a successful hunt. When it comes to duck hunting, learning how to properly call should be at the top of your list. First of all, it is important to know when to call and when to not make any noise. For example, if you have already found plenty of ducks that are heading in your direction, don’t risk calling. If you find a group of ducks that is dispersing and heading away from you, use either a single quick or a type of feed call in order to lure them back.
Knowing what species of duck your hunting is also a good idea, because that can affect the calls. While not always possible, if you can use a call that matches the species you will have a better shot at success. Along those same lines, you should realize that certain species of ducks do not respond to calls at all. So, if a call isn’t working, try another tactic.
If you are out with a group of fellow hunters, don’t try to call over each other. You should designate someone as the main caller, and then everyone else can spread out and fill in some additional calls as needed. Too many calls at the same time will rarely attract any ducks.
