So your looking into snow goose hunting, but have no idea where to start.
Getting into snow goose hunting, the most intelligent waterfowl in North America, can be an overwhelming task to overtake. The oldest recorded snow goose was a whopping 27 years and 6 months. The long life-span and habit of concentrating in huge flocks, attribute to being one of the hardest but most rewarding bird to hunt. Do you have the huge spread of 1000 decoys required for decoying snows? Have the electronic calls (to mimic the sound of thousands of snows), trailer, Utv required to haul the tons of equipment? Do you have rotaries, layout blinds, whites, that are required to be in the ball game of chasing these glorious birds? Do you have the access of prime hunting grounds that hold tens sometimes hundreds of thousands of abundant fowl?
Do you know how to implement your resources to lure in this wise bird and his hundreds of buddies. Are you willing to put in countless hours, from sun up to sun down that is necessary for success day in and day. Do you have enough hunting buddies to tackle the everyday hard work snow goose hunting requires to have phenomenal hunts every day? Are you even located in the corridor this wonderful fowl travels each fall and spring? Are you willing to put in the effort it takes to hunt these birds’ hot feeds and move to the next feed every single day or are you just going to set up a permanent and semi-permanent spreads and have mediocre hunts? Do you have the knowledge for your hunts to result in piles and piles during this no limit season. I know its sounds like a unrealistic hunt to tackle, but we, Pluck A Duck, have already laid the ground work for you.

Pluck A Duck Lodge was established in 1989 by my grandfather, Shorty Owens. In 1999, Arkansas by a federal mandate was allowed to take snow geese by almost any means necessary. The guidelines allowed no limits, no plugs in gun, use of electronic calls that use actual recordings of feeding flocks of snow geese, and a season to be held after all other waterfowl seasons had closed. This provided hunters to extend their season and fight the over population of snow geese. We had been chasing snows since we started in ’89 but this season allowed us to really hone in our skills of chasing these birds. This season gave us the ability to use e-calls, lengthen our season and acquire the knowledge to be successful day in and day. The snow goose hunting trend didn’t really kick in for most waterfowlers, until 5 or 6 years ago due to go-pro footage and hunting videos showing these amazing hunts. Now your intrigued and wanting to experience this mind-blowing hunt.
The cost to be successful can be staggering, a traditional snow spread consists of 500 to 2000 decoys which is a hefty price to pay if you wanna play. When we started snow goose hunting in 1989 there where hunters using paper plates, white plastic bags, and milk jugs to decoy these huge flocks of snows with success. Our hunts consisted of using Texas Rags, all those long nights tying the rags to dowels are still embedded into my childhood memories, I hated it.
The years went by and the tougher the birds got to decoy so we moved to silo-socks, and now we deploy full bodied decoys. One of our spread would cost you $12,000 in decoys alone, you could buy a sock spread at 5 grand or so just to get you started. Then you have to get yourself layout blinds at $175 a piece, an electronic caller $500, motion for spread another $1000 to $3000 depending how much you want to throw at them. Your thousands upon thousands of dollars in the hole before you even place your first decoy. I know this will take the air out of the tires, but that is why we have done all this for you. We have all the top of the line gear you need to be successful on your hunt at Pluck A Duck.
Say you have all the components of your spread, now where to go hunt these birds? Snow geese travel from the tundra down through the Dakotas, Nebraska, Illinois, Kansas, NW Missouri, to winter in SE Missouri, Eastern Arkansas, Texas, Northern Louisiana and Mississippi. They do not start there journey back up until Late February, to the last Ross geese, in Mid-March. Here in Arkansas at THE PLUCK, we are fortunate to winter the highest concentration of snows than anywhere else. Arkansas’s snow goose hunting is different than our northern counter parts. As they winter and feed here, we at Pluck A Duck, hunt Hot Feeds. Hot feed hunts should be the main setup for hunting Arkansas Snows, although it’s not the industries standard. We are not a migration state as these birds arrive Oct and don’t leave until March. This is why we do not hunt semi-permanent or permanent spreads. Hunting hot feeds, introduces more variables to your hunt and involves more work. The amount of people that require a successful hunt day in and day out just tripled.
We have that taken care of for you, each spread we run, consist of 2 guides and at least 2 scouts that work together to keep you on new hot fields every day of your hunt. They will implement the strategies and set up of these numerous fresh fields to produce the best possible hunt. Then there is the problem of acquiring the land that these snow goose flocks are feeding upon. I was born and raised here in Wynne, Arkansas to a respectable farming family, I am a known local to most landowners around our operation. This has allowed me to gain access to over 50k acres of prime hunting ground. My respect for others land and my reputation as well as family’s reputation has given me the opportunity to share this experience with you.
The 30 years of knowledge chasing snow geese, has sculpted us as one of the most successful guiding services available. When hunting these birds it seems like every day is a new experience. Take two years ago, we had a record year hatch that turned into a stellar 98 bird spread average.
Fast forward one year and a snow storm wipes out 99% of the hatched juveniles. This in return causes one of the toughest seasons to date. What we did, I take a lot of pride in, I contacted all my hunters and forewarned them of the upcoming hunts. I lost out on over 200 hunts in the process of figuring out how to hunt these all adult flocks. We started out averaging only 5 birds a day. The loss of revenue doesn’t equivalent to the respect and honor I get from being honest to my clientele. We are here to share a love and experience of waterfowl hunting to our guest. I take it very personable if I can’t produce for my hunters, even more than the hunters themselves. After throwing everything we could think of at these hard headed flocks of snow geese, we tried an off the wall tactic. I threw out the E-callers, the motion, the huge spreads and deployed a spread of 70 full-bodies and use of a mouth call. This tactic is not by any means the norm when hunting snows and most years not a successful tactic, but we went from killing 5 birds a day to 25,35 even 50 bird days. Even after thirty years of chasing snows we are being taught by these magnificent birds and that is why my love and passion for this bird is so great.
