2011 was the most recent year for the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. This report, which is released once every five years, provides a breakdown of hunters by state as well as by the game they’re tracking.

Overall, the hunting industry in our country has gotten healthier in recent years, as this article published by Three Rivers Edition reports. Expenditures on hunting in the U.S. increased by more than $10 billion since the last survey in 2006, from $22.9 billion up to $33.7 billion. In 2011, 13.7 million Americans took to the wilderness to hunt, up from 12.5 million in 2006.

In Arkansas, upwards of 363,000 people aged 16 and older hunted during 2011. Most of those, about 316,000 people, were state residents. Another 62,000 children aged from 6 to 15 also took part in hunting trips, accompanied by adults already registered with the state, a tribute to our state’s culture of hunting as a family tradition. A total of 11 million hunting days were registered among all of the state’s hunters, which averages out to about 30 hunting days per individual.

Far and away, deer are the most popular target for state hunters; about 308,000 people hunted deer in 2011. Turkey is the second-most popular target among hunters, with 112,000 Arkansans reporting that they sought out this game bird. In third place was duck hunting, which 87,000 Arkansans participated in during 2011.
